June rain prompts new mudslide, closure on Highway 50 in El Dorado County
A section of Highway 50 damaged by winter storms experienced a new mudslide Thursday.
California Department of Transportation crews will be working over the next few days to clear more than 50 truckloads of new debris that fell onto the westbound lane at Alder Creek, a rural location between White Hall and Kyburz, according to a Caltrans news release. The two-lane section of the highway is separated by temporary concrete barriers.
Caltrans announced that this section of highway would be closed Thursday night for the cleanup work.
The westbound lanes initially were closed by debris Thursday. During the day, however, the slide continued to encroach on the eastbound lane to the point that the highway needed to the shut down in both directions, Caltrans reported.
Highway 50 will be closed at Meyers on the east side and at Ice House Road in Riverton on the west. Westbound motorists can take Highway 89 to Highway 88, to Highway 49 and back to Highway 50 in Placerville. Eastbound motorists can use the detour in reverse.
Caltrans and its emergency contractor, Doug Veerkamp General Engineering Inc., will work long hours over the next several days to clear the debris from roadway and stabilize the slope.
